In October 2004 after surgery for a slipped disk, Pietro was diagnosed as having a severe infection of the vertebrae and the inter-vertebral disks.
In the severest of cases this type of inflammation is highly debilitating and can lead to irreversible damage to the vertebral column.

For most patients practically the only possibility for recovery and rehabilitation is through the surgical implant of a metal plate that prevents the infected vertebrae from collapsing, but obviously has the disadvantage of considerably reducing back movements.

This treatment is unavoidable for many patients. For others it is not.
